What do you want most right now?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 09, 2008:

The notices in my inbox about blogs I have commented on !!Hahahaha,I realised just how much easier it was to keep track of myself with the help of Gaia, now I need to remember where I have been and what I said...I no longer have a string of messages to open,I suddenly feel lonely....Is Gaia trimming down? Reshaping?.......Ok,I am over it..................The real issue that came up up for me is the pressure that I feel from friends and relatives about this Christmas season and the lack of money to go out and buy STUFF for everyone...To me this whole thing has just become a huge marketing scam...from the tree to the wrapping,to the special gift...no wonder there are so many suicides at this particular time of year,it is so stressful if one has no money...................What I would want is that we all give non-tangible gifts, there would be no paper waste,no plastic overload, and no unessesary waste of trees and as for non-tangible,it would amount to love, real long hugs, expressing our feelings, massages, stories, real time together without the usual distractions in the background............For those in need, food and money...forget the Bling.........Remembering the essence of this celebration,it was LOVE in all aspects, the love of God for the human race, the love of a son to do his Fathers will, and the love and respect of the human race in return......Let us invest in love, share love...give the gift of LOVE and let it fill all hearts and bring joy to all corners in this world..............My love to you as you read this......R

If only we could change the expectations of society.  People expect to have the material and are disappointed when they receive the non-tangible.  How many of us have truly received the non-tangible around the holidays and can say that the best gift we ever got, was that moment?  I know I can.

The love, admiration, and kindness is what makes the everlasting memory - not the ipod or the digital camera.  It’s time to reshape the way we think.

Great blog, Rafael.  Lotsa love.

Thanks Rachel,…I have this feeling that we are reshaping the way…it has to happen otherwise we will bury ourselves with our own junk..and our values are changing…along with our ethics…kindness is … Rich, maybe you could be the change?

Ralph, perhaps this downturn will have the consequence you suggest, for more people–not just NOT being able to give expensive gifts; but realizing what the real gifts are…

BTW, your Activities tab tells you which blogs you’ve commented on; and then you can go to them to check. I didn’t realize notifications wasn’t working; and admit to having the same trepidation: where is everyone?

I agree that Christmas is too commercialized and materialistic. When I was little one Christmas my adored grandparents arrived with with a very small gift for each of us. When Grandmother saw my disappointment she hugged me and told me with a twinkle in her eye that the best presents come in the smallest of packages. I cannot even remember what the gift turned out to be! But I remember feeling cherished and loved as I learned the important lesson!

Last year everyone in our family was on a tight budget so we invented the gift basket. Everyone brought one or a few little items, like a refrigerator magnet, pair of socks, book from the used book store, or packet of cocoa, etc., and put them unwrapped in the basket. After dinner and the family now settled around a tiny live tree (planted in my sister’s yard later), the youngest person brought the basket to each person around in a circle and each person was allowed to pick one thing out of the basket until all the items were gone. It was fun seeing which things each one would pick, oftentimes not what I thought they would pick! Learned how much fun anonymous giving can be…

Hi Meenakshi, and thanks for the tip…I think that you are right about a forced cut back bringing on an awareness of a new reality that is not so consumer driven..and we find more heartspace…………………………Ingbrita, thanks for the visit, and your story of the little gift was a treat..so true,I really think that there is fun in inexpensive treats,as well as the fact you cannot be disapointed…………….Sherrie you are my heroine for Dec..what a great read that thread..now if I was savy I could link to it…love you!!
